Does anyone know of a source of a maple neck blank that is 3"x4" that I can cut out 2 necks from? I can find vendors that sell 1"x4" boards, but I think I would rather have a solid neck or at least laminated...

I use turning "spindle blanks" they can range from 1 1/2" to 4" even 6" at times, often they are perfectly 1/4 sawn. Most reputable hardwood suppliers should have them.

Get 3 of the 1" boards, turn them up on edge, and laminate.

You do realize that the short grain in one-piece necks makes the headstock more prone to breaking, right? This is a very common problem in Gibsons (and others), especially with high tension (electric and steel) strings.

The laminated scarf joint is significantly stronger and fairly easy to do.

Not as much of an issue if the truss rod adjustment is not in the headstock.

Steve,

I'll offer my opinion that you should do EXACTLY what Barry Daniels advised you to do. I have read your post that you don't think the short grain through the neck-headstock area is much of an issue if you have your truss rod adjustment end reversed. I personally think you are mistaken about that. Short grain is short grain. Even with side wings and top and back plates to reinforce this area, it is still vulnerable to breaks. But I know your opinion is formed and firm in your mind. You can make two necks out of the blank you propose and, if you are very careful with them, they will both outlive you. But you could be a might safer doing what Barry recommended, then gluing on side wings, and then gluing on top and back plates. Even if you do what Barry and I do, that area will always be vulnerable.
